The United States turned animal abuse into a federal offense and those who are convicted of the act may receive fines from up to five years in prison, according to newspapers in that country.
The Animal Cruelty and Torture Prevention (PACT) law was voted unanimously and then signed by President Donald Trump, in what is considered a historic triumph for animal protection societies.
The regulations were a claim for several years, following the viralization of cruelty videos of all kinds, including crushing and suffocation of pets and other animals.
The law was signed the same day Trump publicly introduced Conan, the dog who became a hero for his role in the operation that led to the death of the leader of the Islamic State (IS), Abu Bakr al Baghdadi.
"The dog is amazing," Trump said in a brief ceremony, while the Belgian shepherd sat next to him with a trainer. Also present were First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.
